City of Gods and Monsters (House of Devils)
About this deal
This book was excruciatingly slow and it was very complicated (for me) to not roll my eyes at the cheesy and cliché dialogues. Past Awards". National Society of Film Critics. 19 December 2009. Archived from the original on 17 October 2015 . Retrieved July 5, 2021. The banter between them OH MY😩 This is one of my favorite romances ever. The romance was drawn out perfectly, it’s very slow burn but SO rewarding. The chemistry between Loren and Darien is is off the charts, it had me fanning myself. They just deserve happiness and must be protected at all costs. On some sleepless nights, the horns of the sinners became halos, and the streets felt like paradise.”

Please remember that the following opinions are based on the portion of book I've read before deciding to give in. If there's something I might be getting wrong, please take this into consideration and let me know how I can remediate) The Sirens were poultry with a female head. They were living in the seas. Their power lay in their upper body appearance: they were beautiful, young women and had a charming voice when they sang. They used their singing to lure sailors who were passing by their island and slaughter them. The great hero Odysseus (Ulysses), clever as he was, sealed his sailors' ears with wax and bound himself to the mast of his ship, to enjoy himself the beautiful song of the Sirens, without getting in the temptation of following the seductive Sirens. It was utterly adorable to see them slowly come to care for each other and let their walls down. I admit I was hoping for a bit more spice, but what we got was really really good. It was super hot. This book includes dual POV so it follows Loren and Darien's POVs and it really helped me dive into them and I appreciate that so much because it offered me a better insight into them as characters who have different layers to them. Darien is slightly less bad, and I wish I could say the same about the carousel of cardboard cutout side characters who proudly wore their trope badge and were unsurprisingly useless. And Dallas was the worst of them. This Danika Fendyr wannabe will haunt my nightmares from now on, I can tell. I have a lot of thoughts about this book. I didn’t have very high expectations getting into it, and it didn’t grip my interest right away, but I’m so SO glad that I decided to continue, because it got so much better!

Anyways, I highly recommend giving this one a try. As a warning, it's an incomplete series, but the author is currently working on book 2. The 5th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards: Nominees and Recipients". Screen Actors Guild. 1999. Archived from the original on 20 September 2016 . Retrieved 16 September 2016. You are the kindest thing that has ever happened to me. You are…you are my home. And I think it’s safe to say that my life would be a whole lot darker without you in it. You light up my life, Loren Calla.” Thrown in the corrupted underbelly of her city, Loren discovers dark secrets and tries to find her place in a world she doesn’t fully understand while closely escorted and protected by Darien who is street-smart, knowledgeable and resourceful.
She felt safe in his grasp, like his strength was keeping the shattered pieces of herself together.” The BFCA Critics' Choice Awards:: 1998". Broadcast Film Critics Association. Archived from the original on December 12, 2008. I died every time Darien called Loren "sweetheart" or "baby". He is so tender and sweet to her when he wants to be. He is protective and takes care of her whenever she is injured. He is just so so swoon-worthy. There was a perfect balance between the romance and the primary plot, and I loved that neither got neglected. Right when I thought I knew what is coming, it took me by surprise by going somewhere entirely different. I must say that this doesn’t apply to the ending, which I found a bit predictable.

so, for what this is, the story has pretty good entertainment value. even if its not the most original thing about there.
SO, this is an adult urban fantasy that has: action, adventure, mystery, forced-proximity and found family tropes (my favourites) and a slow-burn romance with heaps of sexual tension (it almost killed me). It also includes main characters with mental illness and chronic illness representation, which we just don’t get enough of and it was awesome. It takes place in a dark — almost Gotham esque city that’s full of crime and is really dangerous. I loved that about it because all the danger just ramped up the excitement. Loren and Darien are definitely rising up to be one of my favorite couples that I got to know this year. The chemistry and sexual tension between the two is INTENSE. Loren's characterization: I think Kayla did a fantastic job of writing such a relatable and vulnerable character that was not necessarily a badass but she didn't need to be one to stand out. She is led by her emotions and some may consider that a weakness but in her case, I see it as a strength because she does not live in a kind world. She does have fears but is such a courageous person. He is a pure-blooded hellseher and leader of the Seven Devils, the most feared Darkslayer circle in the city. Where Loren is at the bottom of the "food chain", he definitely is at the apex.
