About this deal

This is probably my own fault as I went into the book expecting a lot more content about nature and the rewilding process than I found in the book. Anyone who has experienced a traumatic bereavement will have seared into their memory the moment their world changed, the split second that divided “before” from “after”. Audrey Ward * The Sunday Times * Ben chronicles the unfathomable tragedy of his daughter’s death with the profound love and compassion of a bereft parent.

I have learnt so much about the ‘nature-of-all-things’ and the spiritual hope that is open to all of us, and I have been utterly moved forever after reading Ben’s beautiful and eloquently written story, both deeply sad and uplifting, it is admirable that such a book now exists. The rewilding movement must aim to better integrate sympathetic groups, including people living in cities, and support a shift in access and ownership over the future of wild Britain. Ultimately, though, it was the continuous lure of the natural world that allowed Ben to find hope and healing in nature. I'm always hesitant about star rating memoirs, so this is down to preference of writing style and helpfulness towards my own experiences.Ben was a Director at DEFRA for five years, successfully advocating for a series of ground-breaking environmental restoration policies during his tenure, including the new Environmental Land Management scheme, the Nature for Climate Fund and the Species Reintroductions task force.

Until we can imagine a future with a variety of new, sustainable avenues for people to engage with meaningfully nature, we are going to struggle to shift the dial. The story follows Ben from the day of his daughter’s tragic accident and then through the following months. In this year’s nonfiction Pulitzer prize winner, two acclaimed reporters bring painstaking rigour and intimacy to bear on their quest to know him, speaking to his family, friends and teachers, and detailing the historical and political events that shaped his experience, from slavery to mass incarceration. Thank you for letting us in and for sharing the unique auburn flame of your daughter that continues to blame so brightly.Med dette lille unntaket: En bok meget vel verd å lese, den gir mye til naturelskere, til oss som vet lite om å gjenreise naturen, om sorg, om søken etter mening, og om det fins en gud. There is a growing suite of evidence for nature healing trauma, [11] and intuitively, as is the case with many people facing disaster, Goldsmith knew to find solace in the wild.

In this very moving memoir, the leading rewilder and green investor bares his soul to let us into the darkest moments of his most private grief … His themes of loss, love and recovery are universal, the story beautifully told.Of course, the two elements of the book – the healing of nature and the healing of the self – are intertwined.
