About this deal

About 2/3rd of the way through, it was hard to keep going - perhaps because it offers so much to work on that it feels a bit overwhelming. There are some books, though very few, that remain ‘evergreen’—that through the years remain as useful and challenging as the day they were written. That being said, if you have a father, a son, a husband, or really just any man, this book is a must read on the disciplines that God expects of you. R. Kent Hughes' book, Disciplines of a Godly Man, should be required reading for men of all ages and one that is picked up again and reread every few years.

For that reason, I’m delighted to see it just so slightly refreshed as it’s prepared to challenge a whole new generation of men with its biblical principles and timeless wisdom. A helpful challenge for me to live up the biblical commands for Christian men across the whole of life. For instance there’s various Bible reading plans presented to the readers, a personal reading survey in which Kent Hughes asks various Christian leaders what are their five favorite books (secular or sacred) and what’s their spiritual ones that’s their favorite, etc.He retired from his pulpit ministry at College Church and was given the title Senior Pastor Emeritus in December 2006. Kent Hughes does a great job of breaking down what it looks like to be a Godly Man and how men can apply these disciplines to our lives. This book was incredibly useful in helping me understand that spiritual discipline is essential to godliness and that discipline is essential to accomplish anything in this life. The man who carries on an act of impurity is not simply breaking a human code, nor even sinning against the God who at some time in the past gave him the gift of the Spirit. For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God; that no one transgress and wrong his brother in this matter, because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as we told you beforehand and solemnly warned you.

Everything is explained in such a way that I often stopped to think, 'Why didn't I see that before'. Over 250 pages devoted to the practical outworking of discipline on subjects like purity, marriage, prayer, the tongue, the mind, our work, leadership, ministry, and many, many more. I recommend this book on discipline to any man who wants to break out from the norm and truly worship God through a consistent prayer life and and a closer understanding of the word of God. I am so weary of the peculiar therapeutic atmosphere in which we live today that is scared stiff to tell anybody to do anything or to warn anybody of dangerous consequences of failing to take responsibility for his or her life. Discipline is a subject about which the Scriptures say much―but contemporary authors have been peculiarly silent. He is sinning against the God who is present at that moment, against One who continually gives the Spirit.

I really enjoyed Hughes' blend of Scripture, practical, personal examples and literature, poetry and other stories from the culture around us.He points out the statistics of the amount of TV people watch on a daily basis as compared to the relatively small amount spent reading. But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among the saints.

This sin is seen in its true light only when it is seen as a preference for impurity rather than a Spirit who is holy. It is a well thought out comprehensive compilation of encouragements and challenges to help us grow in godliness and well worth having a copy to hand.Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving. Kent Hughes' Disciplines of a Godly Man a positive influence on thousands of adults, this adaptation by Kent, his son Carey, and veteran youth leader Jonathan Carswell outlines the disciplines necessary to help a young man align every facet of his life with the fundamental truths of the Bible.
