Three or four out of the five gathered every few months or so during holidays, events, or times when their work obligations converged, but Noele’s college graduation had rendered the St. Though a bit clunky, the dramatic story and hefty subject matter would make a fine adaptation to the silver screen. Some characters were introduced, and yet we spent no time understanding who they were or why they were important to Kitty.

I did wind up enjoying the flashbacks more, but the last few chapters of the present day story were truly incredible. I can only hope that further revisions were made between the advanced copy I received and the final publication.Startled to find the sixteen-seat conference table full, they didn’t break stride as they took the two remaining seats. The same still happens today lol so saying this plot point is “unrealistic” is laughable and so very ignorant. I think while of course, there are things that happen to Kitty, she makes the choice to go along with it too. The author has a way of not allowing you to sympathize with characters without presenting the painful facts.

The story as I mentioned could have been a great story but it suffered from a disorganized storytelling and a weak modern framing of that story. We didn't realize anyone's importance or struggles until the end and by then, it was hard to feel or empathize with anyone. Historical fiction isn't my go-to but I found this novel about Black women passing in Hollywood riveting. Propulsive and entertaining, with broad historical relevance and critical cultural significance, this is the uniquely American story we all need to read―it holds a piece of all of us. Kitty Karr Tate epitomizes the American Dream—a success fueled by bold ambition, ingenuity, and a healthy dose of breathtaking beauty.
