About this deal

DESCENDANT OF THE CRANE might be the book for you if you like political intrigue, twists, complex family dynamics, a roller-coaster type plot with a slow-build to the summit, and questions of morality in your fantasy.

The government has an effective anti-corruption system, the education and job market are based on merit and not nepotism.A beautiful debut with thrilling politics and strokes of magic, set in a lush world that feels real and weighted with its own complex history. But, like, seriously, both are about royal siblings who must struggle to learn to manage their kingdoms in times of severe political upheaval. I also wanted to take a moment to say that it's hard to convey everything a book is through a synopsis alone and I want to apologize if the previous one for DESCENDANT is misleading. Determined to deliver justice, she decided to start a trial to find the murderer and become the next queen. Perhaps the slow-moving plot would have been more interesting for me to read if I’d been given anything else to care about.

I hope this book doesn't get buried under the pile of generic YA fantasies with flashier covers and dramatic names like "Queen of Blood/Ash/Shadows/Fire". It's a Chinese-inspired fantasy/saga of a princess turning into a queen and trying to navigate court intrigue and family politics.

I enjoyed how it progressed through the book and how at the end they’re not already thinking of each other as soulmates, but rather are willing to dedicate their time to understanding and knowing one another better. Hesina is a flawed but compelling character and it is interesting to see how the choices she makes in the book end up changing her. I am curious about the names, and why some are Chinese but Hesina's is, I believe, an alternate spelling of a Muslim name, and Lillian is a very Western name. The story takes place in a Chinese inspired court where the king is killed and Princess Hesina becomes Queen.

Titan Books will use the information you provide on this form to be in touch with you and to provide updates and marketing. I fell in love with the characters of Descendant of the Crane so fast, I was making them my new family just 25% of the way in. Some were sidelined with little page time and then written with the assumption that the reader already knew them intimately, one significant example being the love interest. SYNOPSIS: Descendant of the Crane tells the story of Princess Hestina of Yan who's rushed into the role of Queen after her father's sudden demise.Deep world-building, magical family secrets, and intricate palace politics - Descendant of the Crane soars from page one. I found myself looking forward to seeing how the other mysteries in this book would be resolved and finding myself pleasantly surprised each time. There is potential left here for a sequel and despite a little bit of a slow start in the beginning, I soon was swept away by this tale.
