About this deal

Original and imaginative, as profoundly intimate as it is grand in scope, Cold People is a masterful and unforgettable epic.

Reading the first section of this book carefully and intelligently tells us everything we need to know about the main players in this book and sets the stage for what is to come and how they will behave when faced with trying to survive in the hostile wastes of Antarctica and I think it is very cleverly done. Part Frankenstein and part Nineteen Eighty-Four, the latest novel by the author of Child 44 (2008) is nothing if not ambitious.Cold People is a vastly ambitious novel, tackling the weightiest questions of our time in a form that rarely loses the tension of a thriller, despite the complexity of its subject matter. Did the scientists succeed in creating a hybrid human that will perpetuate the human race, or did they simply create yet another monster of ambition, vainglorious selfishness and greed? Some of the writing and the unravelling of the plot was wonderfully done, but I struggled with the storyline at times. The race is on to see who wins out as the new reigning population, and who they will take under their wing, and who they will banish to a lessor portion of the frozen world.

I’ve read the author’s novels set in Stalinist Russia and The Farm and i was interested in this because it sounded like such a departure from hi earlier work and I’m glad I did. One of Yotam’s tests for Eitan to prove his capacity for empathy is to show him movies and gauge his reactions. Another suspension of disbelief is required, especially since the supply chain has been completely disrupted and they seem to be able to cobble together whatever is needed while surviving in brutal cold. This book is very different from the author's previous Child 44 trilogy (I haven't read any of his other books). From the brilliant, bestselling author of Child 44 and creator of the FX series Class of ’09 comes a “cinematic” ( The Washington Post), “captivating…[and] “brilliantly conceived postapocalyptic story” ( Booklist, starred review) about an Antarctic colony of global apocalypse survivors seeking to reinvent civilization under the most extreme conditions imaginable.Marooned in a place that humanity was never designed to live, with the limited supplies that could be gathered in the rushed exodus, this is a story of man starting from scratch and adapting to their new circumstances. I don't usually give up on a book this early (trying to read this over two weeks and still only on page 52), but there are too many great books out there waiting to be read and this one. Cold People follows the perilous journeys of a handful of those who endure the frantic exodus to the most extreme environment on the planet. I also didn’t like that we don’t learn the purpose of the alien takeover and the complete surrender of humankind without question.
