About this deal

I don’t know, I understand that this was a product of its time, and that public opinion and the disenfranchised can be manipulated; but seeing it happen, especially to the most vulnerable of the city, and using it as a justification for them becoming ravenous beasts, doesn’t entirely sit well with me.

Michael: I do feel that after a while, the book loses focus and becomes ridiculously large scale in a manner I had no idea was coming. Bernie Wrightson- para -junto al lisérgico color de Bill Wray- dar una de las más delirantes, pesadillescas y retorcidas historias del murciélago humano. Michael : Blackfire recruiting an army of downtrodden and homeless and turning them against the criminals that plague their lives is a great angle that I wish the story focused on more. When Batman refuses to attack the man, Rat-Face charges towards the man with a large knife and stabs him to death before Batman can stop him. I particularly enjoyed a number of sequential panels Wrightson does, for instance after Batman’s been shot and he’s trying to get up, instead he literally falls to pieces.

Michael : I can’t say Batman: The Cult is a bad book, but I don’t think it’s the type of story for me. The second issue of The Cult opens with Batman dreaming that he’s shooting Two-Face to death with an Uzi. Michael : Unfortunately I don’t think it’s totally out of the realm of believability that some citizens wouldn’t leave Gotham once Blackfire takes it over.

Josh: Yeah, out of all of the titles we selected, I feel like Batman: The Cult will probably be the one that our readers are less familiar with. Michael : The scene where Bruce looks up at the huge Blackfire idol was horrifying in a beautiful cosmic way. You know that you’re about to get a thrill, when Jim Starlin is writing and even more if it’s something for DC, and even more and more if it’s about Batman. His gritty, noir-ish take on Batman was what fans wanted at the time and with this story, he would once again deliver. When Marvel Comics wished to use the name of Captain Marvel for a new, different character,[citation needed] Starlin was given the rare opportunity to produce a one-shot story in which to kill off a main character. Just in the start a little bit and they never really play the immortality angle and don't explain so thats a missed opportunity. There should really be only a single reason that matters, and dependability should not factor into it. I enjoy it when Batman stories get back to his street level crime fighting with not superpowers involved.

It’s also great that an amazing artist like Wrightson was able to work on the Dark Knight and together they were able to produce a classic. It's dumb and riddled with plot holes, poor dialogue, even worse characterisation, and featuring the most contrived bad guy ever.

In his introduction Jim Starlin refers to and draws direct comparisons with the religious right and their willingness to apply censorship to literature and burn books. Now, Batman will live in a mental prison that will make him see the world according to Blackfire’s words. Batman himself falls victim of the cult built by Deacon Blackfire and he’s submitted to a maddening process of brainwash. Thanks to the city under hell, Robin, and his determination, it's up to Batman to make it out alive and save everyone.
