Slow-burn/friends-to-lovers romance – I usually go for enemies-to-lovers romance but I do love some slow-burn and friends-to-lovers plot. And it was this, the first glimpse of my distant family member at the airport, that made my journey even more surreal than when I boarded my flight.
Lila only really mentioned an ex-boyfriend and a best friend (both also responsible for 2 of the 3 things that had devastated her so much) and this was a larger social circle that helped her adjust to a different country and find things to enjoy within that country. the second, was partially because of a book club, but also because i was looking for a way to heal after my own grandmother had passed. Orion is quite knowledgeable about tea and a very cute moment was him trying to figure out Lila’s perfect tea flavor. Sorry, he says, and casts another concerned glance at my traveling outfit, the same one he’s been side-eyeing since I exited customs.Lila I think, had lived a very sheltered life before this, only Miami and her family bakery and England brings about opportunity for Lila to realise that although she has learned Cuban dishes and pastries and treats very well, there is still so much she could learn and other places that could teach her. He believes in superstitions (because of his mum’s situation), but still a self-assured boy who goes out of his way to help his neighborhood and friends.
Look, I get that Lila and her grandmother are/were obviously very talented but seeing Lila criticise everything, especially scones of all things, in England was a bit off-putting. It sounds like spending the last half hour with me has caused her accent to lean southwest a little. Her debut novel, The Library of Lost Things, is still on my TBR list and Kindle, and I can’t wait for her third book, When We Were Them. The book is just generally awful for many reasons including the main character is supposed to be 17 but is written more like a 35 year old.
