About this deal

The words and pictures work together because the text links to the picture. For example, when the text talks about the terrible storm they illustrations show the effects of the storm; the swirling and crashing of the waves against the harbour. The texts talks about the seaside, the illustrations clearly show the reader what the text is describing. Mark’s father had told him all about the mermaids. About what they looked like and how they sounded. About how they could turn their tails to legs and come up to land, but only if they kept something special from their home beneath the waves. In the time his mother spent out of the house – long days spent at sea on a fishing boat – Mark passed his time walking up and down the beach. During summer, Mark’s friends would all go away to visit family in other parts of the country, leaving him with warm hugs and bright smiles. He never much minded being alone for the summer, in fact he was used to it. He’d spent seventeen summers alone with no problems. Of course, it was easier when his father was around to keep him entertained, but it had been three summers without him. The images in this book are unusual and beautiful, and this book can be used in many different ways. One of the ways it can be used is in pshe lessons to teach morals. It can also be used in art or in English where the story can be further explored through drawings or stories.

Available from 5pm to 12:30am. Upon entering, a mermaid will appear and begin singing to the player, accompanied by a cutscene. The performance lasts 1 hour and 40 minutes. The player may leave the boat anytime, but leaving will restart the show.Looking for some extra engaging mermaid activities for early years? Here are some of our favourite ideas to support learning and fun in your space: Mark’s heart ached. “We’ll keep you safe for her. And tomorrow, we’ll keep looking for your mirror.” His father would tell him incredible stories about the mermaids he had met, entertaining him all summer long with different encounters. However, when fishing with an Iridium Rod with a Curiosity Lure, chances of catching some of the items increase. Specifically, the chances of catching a Blobfish, Spook Fish, Super Cucumber, or Pearl is increased with the lure. Consequently, the chances of catching the other items decrease. The beautifully drawn pictures are illustrated with deep blues, turquoise and purple, I think they help the reader to understand the key moments in the book and help the reader to visualise what the seaside may be like if they have never been to the seaside before.

A sombre silence settled over them. Mark had never been told much about how his parents met. But Mark shrugged it off, slipping his hand into his mother’s and squeezing her fingers. Take a look in our underwater paradise, full of mermaid maths, art and literacy activities. Alongside brilliant display resources and craft activities, you'll find enhancements for your continuous provisions too. Resources like these Mermaid Role Play Masks support children's imaginative play. They're perfect fuel for their imaginations and help them get into character too.Mark had never seen anyone like them. Their skin was bronzed, as if they were made of the sunlight only seen in the late afternoon. Their hair, still damp from the sea, was brown and green and gold, glistening in the light and glimmering. The clothes they wore were the colour of sea foam and had a fluidity to them that made Mark feel like they were woven from the waves themselves. The author uses italics to distinguish between the narrator and Freya’s speech, which is more rhythmic and song-like. Ray also plays with the position of the text to connect it with the pictures. For example, it is swirled in a circle over a picture of a spiralling wave.

Mark jumped, hand clutching at his chest as he turned around to face his mother. Her dressing gown was wrapped around her and she padded softly forward, sitting cross legged next to Mark on the dusty floor. She smiled, balancing herself on the side of the boat as she stepped into it. “I’ll try my best, doll.”The text is full of descriptive language to convey the illustrations. The narrative is simple and interesting and therefore children may relate to the story. The text flows well and the text is set out with shapes representing themes in the book such as wave and a whirpool. The text fits well with the story with the words swirling around the whirlpool in the sea or shaped like sound waves when you hear the mermaid singing through the shell. The pictures and text feel like a process as there is a clear relationship between them. As a result, the book is enticing, you can find hidden things and try to predict what is going to happen next. It’s great for stimulating imagination and creativity. The market starts at 5pm, and will be in port for the next three days. Please visit the beach after 5pm to join the festivities. There's free coffee!”

Unlike other Festivals, villagers can be seen deviating from their normal schedules to walk to the beach to attend the Night Market. These villagers cannot be found outside the Night Market during the festival. The lists below show which villagers attend on which days each year. Shimmering lights may appear in the water, and the Copper Pan can be used on them to obtain ores, gems, etc.Since the game uses a unique beach map during festival days, items a player has placed on the beach ( Crab Pots, Chests, etc.) may disappear during the Night Market. These items should return on Winter 18. Mark tugged off his shirt and stepped out of his shoes, slowly sinking into the water. “My father used to bring me here when I was younger. He said it was where he saw his first mermaid.” Make an underwater display for your space. A lovely way to keep your space bright and beautiful, and to show off children's hard work. Children can make their own Split Pin Mermaids and colour and design their own Merfolk too to create a bustling scene. I would use the book with a KS1 class who enjoy fantasy stories. We could use hot-seating or a conscience alley to investigate how Eliza might feel when she hides the mirror from Freya because she wants her to stay. This would start a discussion about friendship issues, the feeling of loneliness because Eliza only has her father and keeping secrets from others.
